Curbside Pickup
Residents place their garbage bins at the curb. Garbage trucks, typically equipped with hydraulic arms or manual loaders, collect the waste.
- Garbage trucks transport the collected waste to a transfer station or processing facility.
- Transfer Stations: These are intermediate locations where waste is compacted and loaded onto larger vehicles for long-distance transport.
- At the transfer station or material recovery facility (MRF), recyclable materials are sorted and removed (if not pre-sorted at collection).
- Hazardous or non-compliant materials may also be separated at this stage.
- Landfill: Most non-recyclable trash is transported to a landfill. Modern landfills are engineered to minimize environmental impact, with liners and gas collection systems.
- Incineration: In some regions, waste is sent to incineration facilities for energy recovery.
- Recycling Centers: Recyclable materials are sent to facilities that process them into reusable raw materials.
- Landfills:
• Trash is buried and compacted.
• Landfills monitor methane emissions and groundwater contamination.
- Waste-to-Energy Plants:
• Some waste is burned to generate electricity or heat.
- Composting:
• Organic waste may be processed into compost in specialized facilities.
